Is it the right one?

Who the butcher's twine suits

A good fit when

A trussed chicken cooks evenly: the legs stay in, the wings do not burn. This twine is plain cotton with no dye and no coating, which is what you want next to food.

Take 1 mm for herbs, small roasts and parcels. Take 2 mm for a turkey or a rolled joint, where a thin string would cut into the meat. Rolls hold 328 or 656 feet and come singly or in packs of two.

Know before you buy

  • Cotton chars over a direct flame. Keep the ends short on the grill.
  • The 1 mm twine can cut into soft meat. Use 2 mm for a heavy bird.
  • It is not for the garden: cotton rots fast outdoors.

I use this in my garden to tie up my tomato plants in a Florida Weave. It’s a little thicker and softer than the stuff at my local garden center and I prefer that, it doesn’t seem to make weird string burn like marks on the tomato stems. It’s easy to tie, holds up all season, and can withstand quite a bit of weight. Good value for the money, will be purchasing again.
